UV film on new Aeros gliders

J.D. Guilemette writes:

As a US Aeros Dealer for glider products, this topic was of
interest to me. So I contacted Aeros directly to get some additional
information.

Aeros confirmed that as of January 2018 they have been using sail laminate with
UV film for UV protection. This is the sail material listed on their web site as
“Technora – DP ODL06 UVP White” and “Technora – DP ODL04,5 UVP Smoke”. So, for
example, the ODL04.5 smoke UVP currently used in production has UV film 0.75
mils on one side and standard film 0.75 mils on the other side. Just to be
clear, this is not the same laminate that Wills Wing uses, it was unavailable.
However, as it was explained to me, Dimension Polyant offered Aeros “another but
similar fabric with slightly improved specifications". This is the sail material
Aeros is currently using.

As Drobyshev pointed out earlier in this discussion, John Simon’s sail (that
Davis used in his example) due to it’s production date (2016) has the ODL06 UVP
white leading edge (UV protected) and the rest of the sail has ODL04.5 without
UV protection, although the option for the entire sail made of ODL06 UVP was
available at the time. So last weekend I looked at John’s sail and the leading
edge (ODL06 UVP White) was in great shape with respect to UV resistance and the
rest of the sail with ODL04.5 smoke without UV protection was showing signs of
UV damage as seen in Davis’s photo.

It is unfortunate that John’s sail is showing signs of UV damage, but a lot can
be learned as to the effectiveness of UV protection. As far as real world
comparison (and forget about the all the specs being stated). Since this
particular sail has both UV protected and non UV protected laminates used on the
same sail, any comparison doesn’t get any better than this.  There is no
question that both sections of John’s glider have had the same UV and
environmental exposures and it’s a better comparison than two different gliders
of “about the same age and hours”. It’s obvious that the UV Protection used on
the leading edge is effective.

John's new sail will have UV film protected sail material on the entire top
surface, so this will not be an issue for him any more. This is also the case
for any Aeros gliders 2018 and newer with the Technora sail options.

Just make sure when you make the sail that the UV film is on the
top side.
