The Senior Class

Glen Volk was distressed to read the following in this recent Oz
Report article: https://ozreport.com/23.31#1

Sport Class rules for our competitions:

Pilot qualification: Pilots must meet the requirements of minimum hang 3 rating;
as well as aerotow (AT), turbulence (TURB) and cross country (XC) sign offs.
Aerotow rating or evidence of extensive aerotowing experience. USHPA membership
will be required (temporary 30-day memberships will be available at minimal cost
on site).

Pilots must not have been listed in the top twenty US pilots since January 2008
for entry into sport class. Pilots must not have finished in the top 2/3rd's of
a non-Sport Class Category 1 competition held since January 2014, for entry into
sport class.

I for one have been thinking about jumping into the sport class.
I’m kind of over the high end gliders, the expense and the extra work it takes
to fly one well. I understand why you do not want a deluge of experienced comp
pilots jumping in and taking unfair advantage of the new pilots just starting
out on their journey but isn’t there a middle ground on the 10 year rule about
not having been a highly ranked Class one pilot? Maybe a weighting system of
some kind could be employed?

Just musing a bit but I could see myself on a Gecko or Sport type glider in the
next few years for sure. Hate to think I’d have to wait until I am well into my
70’s before making the change.

After some discussion he wrote:

Maybe have a sub class of highly experienced sport pilots and to
award them separately within the comp. Maybe call that the Senior Class or
something like that. I honestly feel that we’d all be surprised at how many of
the top 20 would enter this class over the next 5 years. Our tasks would be
shorter and we’d all be less destroyed at the end of the day leaving more time
for copious reveling and drinking at the end of a long day.

Everyone competes. Same task and actual placements. Then the Senior guys are
excluded from awards for Sport Class and vice versa. And the sport guys get an
actual shot at us in the comp. Not a bad measuring stick for them. I’d envision
them doing very well as we’d have to seriously readjust to our new performance
standard. I know, I’d be over extending for a while.

This is not a proposal for the Sport Class Worlds in 2020. We are
just kicking it around to see if "senior" pilots are interested for the Category
2 Sport Class competitions. We would be happy to accommodate anyone so inclined.
