Raked tips on a Wills Wing Sport 2

Jonathan Dietch writes:

Among other things it completely eliminates the dreaded Horten
wing yaw hunt that otherwise afflicts the Sport 2.

Excellent yaw damping with just enough ability to skid the glider sideways
remaining that assists with maneuvering. Turns are easy to initiate but more
difficult to bank the glider as high. It now acts like a much higher aspect
ratio and longer span glider.

In other words it seems as if these are in fact retarding the the initiation of
the vortex further aft and increasing vortex rotation speed thus keeping the
tips flying at high AoA. Now when you stall the glider really noses down like it
means it. This all seems consistent with the research from the 80's.

Of course I would need a wind tunnel and smoke to prove all of this. I
have more than enough hours on the glider to distinctly know the differences. It
is however a much hotter glider with these tips than without and so I must
caution pilots who approach these things lackadaisically.

It trims slower and is as easy to turn as before but now it lacks the adverse
yaw it used to suffer. So the reduction in adverse yaw may merely offset
increased turning effort. I can't say without extensive testing such as spending
a day top-landing at Funston or Torrey then swapping between tips and no tips
while repeating identical maneuvers being recorded from the ground and the air.
