I want to share with you our recent school newsletter (Spanish
version also included) that illustrates how our school in Canoa inspires our
students to love to go to school and learn.

Because of our smaller classroom size, our extensive computer classes, ten hours
of English weekly, strict lesson planning and lots of projects our students
learn more rapidly and gain hands-on experiences from which to learn. Our school
stands out as a place where young people will succeed.

Our volunteers and English teachers come from around the world providing the
kids and their families an opportunity to understand how the world works outside
of their small town.

The James Dean Byrd Foundation raises all its funds to finance our school which
receives no government monies. We do not want money to be a hardship that
prevents parents from sending their children to school so we supply uniforms,
textbooks, supplies and a snack lunch.

Collaborations with organizations, businesses and universities both here and
abroad enable the school’s success. Because of others’ time, talent and money,
Los Algarrobos will begin its eighth year of classes on May 5, 2014.

Eighty-five percent of our annual budget pays for salaries and benefits for our
fourteen employees. In 2014 those expenses will rise 22% due to the government
mandated increases in employee salaries.
