Mountain Fluting Expedition: Cold, Windy & Beautiful, Part 1
After watching a paraglider launch successfully right in front of me, I went about the task that was the real purpose of my outing: getting some new video footage of my Native American flute improvisations. Its been a number of months since I was last at this point, but it was vastly different, weather-wise. Today, there were no cicadas or bird sounds but a lot of wind - almost too much, as it turned out. My fingers quickly learned just how cold it can get up there; nevertheless, I managed to squeeze out a few decent flutations. Due to said conditions, these are all necessarily brief and energetic! Anyone who plays the Native American flute, or any wind instrument, for that matter, understands the meaning of the phrase wet out, which is the condition that occurs when moisture from ones warm breath condenses and forms water droplets, thus interrupting and often completely blocking the flow of air through the sound producing mechanism. In 40-degree weather, wet out happens in a minute or two, max, so it was a constant race to see what I could produce before having to pause and blow out the build-up. Also, I apologize for the intense wind that accents these videos, but hey Nature is what it is! I hope the background scenery makes up for any lack of audio purity.
