Nord-Ost: three days of horror
Today we will be talking about Nord-Ost, the 2002 Moscow theater hostage crisis. On October 23, a terrorist group, 42 heavily-armed men and women, took some 850 people hostage in a packed Moscow theatre. The crisis held the whole nation in a state of shock for three days and ended up on the 26th, with a violent assault by special security forces. All the terrorists were killed and around 130 hostages died as the security forces stormed the Nord-Ost theatre building. Our guest in the studio today is one of the survivors, doctor Modest Silin.
Modest Silin was born in Moscow. From an early age, he dreamt about becoming a doctor. In 1991 Modest realised his ambition and graduated from the Moscow Medical Dental Institute. However it wasn't until the 2002 Nord-Ost theatre siege in Moscow that he realised that he wanted to help people more so then just in a medical way. Modest was one of 850 people held hostage at the theatre for three days. Recalling many dreadful memories, he says that calling his brother in Germany to say goodbye whilst still inside the theatre was one of the hardest conversations he had ever had.

MOSCOW THEATER SIEGE PART-2 (NORD OST)
Film about moscow thatre siege in 2002.Chechen warriors took 850 hostages and demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya and an end to the Second Chechen War. The hostage-takers also demanded termination of the use of artillery and air forces in Chechnya starting the next day a halt to the notorious zachistka ("mopping-up") operations, and that President of Russia Vladimir Putin should publicly declare that he was striving to stop the war in Chechnya. The siege was led by Movsar Barayev.Early in the morning before dawn at around 5:00 a.m. Moscow time, the searchlights that had been illuminating the main entrance to the theatre went out.Inside, athrough many hostages at first took the gas to be smoke from a fire, it soon became apparent to gunmen and hostages alike that a mysterious gas had been pumped into the building. Different reports said it came either through the specially-created hole in the wall, that it was pumped through the theatre's ventilation system, or that it emerged from beneath the stage. It is thought that the security services pumped an aerosol anaesthetic, later conjectured to be weaponized fentanyl, into the theatre through the air conditioning system.After forces from Russia's Specnaz (or "special purpose") from the FSB (Alpha Group and Vympel), with the assistance of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) SOBR unit, surrounded and stormed the theater, first through the gay club Central Station that had opened a month prior in the underground level of the building; all were heavily armed and masked.At least 33 rebels and 129 hostages died during the raid or in the following days.About 700 surviving hostages were poisoned by gas, and some of them became invalids of the second and third category. Several Russian special forces operatives were also poisoned by the gas during the operation.
