JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN - INDIA
Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan state. Built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, the city is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets which are laid out into six quarters separated by broad streets 34 m wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. The Palace quarter encloses a sprawling palace complex (the Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds), formal gardens, and a small lake (wikipedia).

Amber Fort Jaipur. Rajasthan
Amber is situated about 11 kilometres from Jaipur and was the ancient citadel of the ruling Kachhawa clan of Amber, before the capital was shifted in the plains to present day Jaipur.
The Amber Fort set in picturesque and rugged hills is a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Constructed by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and completed by Sawai Jai Singh I the fort is made in red sand stone and white marble. The rugged forbidding exterior belies an inner paradise with a beautiful fusion of art and architecture. Amber is the classic and romantic fort- palace with a magnificent aura. The interior wall of the palace depicts expressive painting scenes with carvings, precious stones and mirror settings. In the foreground is the Maota Lake providing a breathtaking look. Built mainly for the warring enemies as a safe place, the heavily structured walls could defend the residents within the ramparts of the fort.

| JAIPUR India Maharajas landmark destination culture travel log cityscape |
Global Treasures JAIPUR India
GTR-DVD-1182 - Along historic walls, numerous beautiful gates lead into the centre of Jaipur. The city's well- preserved old town, built on the orders of Maharaja Jai Singh, gives the impression that it is almost exactly as it was at the time of its creation in 1727.
In the 18th century it was believed that both the city and palace were unlikely to encounter hostile attack but subsequent events prove this not to be so. Although a number of military defences existed in 1748, the city was attacked by the Maraths.
The exquisite residence of the Maharajas, the Hawa Mahal, otherwise known as the Palace Of The Wind, is now regarded as the finest architectural landmark in Jaipur. However, hiding beyond its magnificent honeycomb-like facade there is a simple staircase: for the building was the domain of the royal harem!
Outside the city, close to the route that led to the former capital of Amber, a fairytale-like castle rises up from a small artificial lake. The Jal Mahal was built in the 18th century by Madho Singh for the royal hunt.
Due to its many fascinating architectural and cultural treasures, Jaipur is deservedly one of the most popular travel destinations in India.
Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

The Jaipur city palace and observatory (Rajasthan)
Jaipur also popularly known as the Pink City, historically sometimes rendered as Jeypore, is the capital of Rajasthan state, India. Jaipur is also the capital of Jaipur District. Jaipur is the former capital of the princely state of Jaipur. The city was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. It was first planned city in India. The population in 2003 was approximately 2.7 million.
The city was built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, and is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets. The city is laid out into six quarters, separated by broad streets 111 ft (34 m) wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, with a sixth quarter immediately to the east. The Palace quarter encloses a sprawling palace complex (the Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds), formal gardens, and a small lake. Nahargarh Fort crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city. Another noteworthy building is Sawai Jai Singh's observatory, Jantar Mantar. Jaipur, with its rich and colourful past, resplendent with tales of valour and bravery is now one of the most important heritage cities in India, and is a must-see for tourists coming to India.
Jaipur is considered by many urbanists to be one of the best planned cities. Almost all Indian towns of that period presented a chaotic picture of narrow twisting lanes, a confusion of run-down forts/temples/palaces and temporary shacks that bore no resemblance at all to the principles set out in Hindu architectural manuals, which calls for strict geometric planning. Thus, for Sawai Jai Singh II and the Bengali Guru Vidyadhar (who belonged to the 'Shaspati' order of Hindu Priest Architects), the founding of Jaipur was also a ritual and a golden opportunity to plan a whole town according to the principles of Hindu architectural theory. The town of Jaipur is in fact, built in the form of a nine-part Mandala known as the 'Pithapada'.
In the 19th century the city grew rapidly and became prosperous, with a population of 160,000 in 1900, and the city's wide boulevards were paved and lit with gas. Its chief industries were in metals and marble, which are fostered by a school of art, founded in 1868. There was also a wealthy and enterprising community of native bankers. The city had three colleges and several hospitals. (wikipedia)
