Paragliding in Slovenia
A mellow afternoon in September, soaring on a ridge to the north of Kobarid in the Soca valley in NW Slovenia. It was hot and thermic and this was my first attempt at handheld video whilst flying. I will have to rig up a helmet mount or something next time. Music is supplied unknowingly by the awesomely talented mr Hall AKA Moby.

Jim is learning to fly with Super Fly. He came to UT and spent a few days. He did three significant flights and then returned to Albuquerque, NM. When he found out that we were doing seven days of boat towing at Lake Roosevelt, he decided to come for all seven. He has approx. 20 flights now and most of them are boat tows to 3000 feet. Jim rocks! But, we teach people to fly like this all of the time. It has a lot of advantages over learning to fly off of hills.

A Beginning of Paragliding
Once upon a time in the early 80s, when people started to fly with big tissues from the hills. This video shows many spectacular scenes of the beginning of paragliding. In the swiss alps, this fantastic sport was pushed by the Zeiter family from Fieschertal. It's important to know, that nobody was seriously injured in all sequences played in this video.

We are having fun flying with friends in Abu Dhabi UAE. Ridge soaring is main flying activity at what we call it "Wathba hill". It is a man made hill build by sands & conical shape. Therefore you can fly with any wind direction. It is getting bigger day by day like paraglider pilots community in Abu Dhabi. Ridge soaring is possible when wind is about 18 to 28 Km/h.

We are having fun flying with friends in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Ridge soaring is the main flying activity. We call this place "Wathba hill". It is about 108 meters from top to bottom. It is a man made hill build by sand & it has a conical shape. Therefore, you can fly with any wind direction. It is getting bigger everyday both the number paraglider pilots & the hill itself.

Para Gliding at Solang Nullah, Manali
Solang Nullah is a world class ski slope. Regular tournaments are conducted during winter. In summer, when the snow has melted away, its converted into a paragliding slope. The Indian Paragliding Association has put up a stall here. There are also other provate operators. I did a high fly take off from a nearby mountain that costed me Rs.1500! Expensive, but worth the experience!
Manali, (alt. 1,950 m or 6,398 ft) in the Beas River valley, is an important hill station in the Himalayan mountains of Himachal Pradesh, India, near the northern end of the Kullu Valley. It is administratively a part of the Kullu District. The population is approx. 30,000. The small town was the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and, from there, over the Karakoram Pass on to Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin. Manali and its surrounding areas are of great significance to the Indian culture and heritage as it was the home and abode of the Saptarshi or seven sages. The ancient cave temple, Hidimba Devi Temple, is not far from town.
In ancient times, the valley was sparsely populated by nomadic hunters known as "rakshas". The next arrivals were the shepherds who arrived from the Kangra valley and settled to take up agriculture. Some of the earliest inhabitants of the region are the 'naur' or 'nar' which is a caste unique to the Kullu valley. Only a few naur families are known to exist now. A naur family in the village Soyal near Haripur on the west bank of Manali was famous for the vast land they owned and their practice of having 'rakshas' as their labourers.
The British were responsible for introducing apples and trout which were not native to Manali. It is said that when apple trees were first planted the fruits were so plentiful that often branches, unable to bear the weight would collapse. To this day apple along with plum and pear remains the best source of income for the majority of its inhabitants.
Tourism in Manali received a real boost after the rise of militancy in Kashmir in the late 1980s. This once quiet village was transformed into a bustling town with hundreds of hotels and restaurants.
Manali is also the name of an old district of Armenia c. 400-800
Many films have been shot in Manali including Henna, Laal Dupatta Malmal Ka, Krrish etc. In the month of May 2007 parts of the film Jab We Met were shot in Manali starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

Phil's First Paragliding Flight 7th May 2008
This was Phil's third session. His first was familiarisation with the equipment and forward launches in virtually no wind. His second was four hours of ground handling. By the end Phil could fly the wing over his head and turn. This was Phil's third session - as you can see - it includes little hops. Phil got to this stage faster than most - because (1)he had good wind conditions (2) he has a background in radio control modelling and kite flying (3) he is very determined. If you are teaching yourself - DO NOT pull up your legs when to start to feel light - keep running until until you are running in the air. AND when you land - KEEP RUNNING. Nearly all learners pull up their feet before they are really flying and sink back down. If you do this, you risk getting yours legs caught under you and twisting / breaking your ankle. The same danger applies on landing. Your feet and legs are your undercarriage and shock absorbers - not your bum which is connected much too rigidly to your spine.
DISCLAIMER
I do not recommend that you teach yourself.
GET OFF MY LAND
Do go on any land or hills without owners permision. You will get paragliders a bad name and may get proper pilots banned from a site that they have worked years to get permission for.
